Gunmen Tuesday killed the judge presiding over the criminal trials of several members of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto’s party, including her husband, Asif Ali Zardari.

Police said Nabi Sher Junejo was killed along with his bodyguard and chauffeur when assailants opened fire on the judge’s car. No one claimed responsibility, and police said no arrests were made.

Police said the attackers used automatic rifles.

Junejo had received threatening telephone calls warning him to resign from the anti-terrorist court trying Zardari and other members of the Pakistan People’s Party.

One-judge anti-terrorist courts were set up by President Ghulam Ishaq Khan after he dismissed Bhutto’s government last August, accusing her and her circle of corruption, power abuse and political ineptitude.

Among the cases being heard by Junejo was that against Bhutto’s husband, who has been jailed in Karachi since Oct. 10, and a former chief minister in her administration, Qaim Ali Shah.

The two men are accused of orchestrating the August massacre of at least 22 people in Karachi.
