The government said Tuesday that it will integrate all South African police training starting in January to ensure that white and black officers perform impartially.

Basic training of the 70,000-strong force, more than half of it black, is now segregated, although further training of existing police officers is increasingly integrated, an official said. Anti-apartheid activists accuse the police of favoring moderate groups in clashes involving Nelson Mandela’s African National Congress.
