* Swan Song: First came the T-shirts, then the book, and now the song. The folk ballad “Pamela’s Song” tells the story of 23-year-old Pamela Smart, a former New Hampshire cheerleader convicted in March of manipulating her teen-age lover to kill her husband. Smart’s sensational trial intrigued folk musician Bob Dorley, 47, so he wrote these lyrics: “So sad, so sad to think it’s not deserved, I wonder, yes, I wonder once again, Can we believe that justice has been served? Oh I wonder with the wind and the rain.”

* Many Thanks: Chuckey Ivey, the “miracle child” at the Orlando, Fla., Regional Medical Center, Monday thanked doctors and nurses for saving his life in July, 1989. Ivey was 11 when his vacationing family’s van was struck head-on by a car near Walt Disney World. His parents and sister were killed and he was critically hurt. Doctors expected him to die. “He wanted to come back and thank everybody,” said Teresa Dowdy, Chuckey’s aunt. “He owes his life to these people.”

* Like Son, Like Father?: In a strong denial issued Monday in New York, Cardinal John O’Connor’s office said he did not tell a Father’s Day congregation that God is a man. Though O’Connor believes that God should be addressed as “Father”--the term Jesus used--he told parishioners at St. Patrick’s Cathedral Sunday that God is neither male nor female but has attributes of both, according to his spokesman.

* Back Again: Back pain forced Prince Charles to cancel all but one public appearance this month. The 42-year-old heir to the throne has a degenerative disc, his surgeon, John Webb, said Monday in London. “In the last five weeks he has suffered severe back pain. He has struggled on, as is his wont, which is aggravating it. He is just not getting better,” Webb said. “He must rest. If he ignores it he may need surgery.”
