A gas station attendant was stabbed and robbed while on duty early Wednesday at a Mission Gorge Road service station, police said.

Albert Black, 59, was in critical condition at Sharp Memorial Hospital with stab wounds to his face and back, a hospital spokeswoman said. Black also was stabbed in the right eye, and it was not known if he will regain his vision, she said.

Black was on duty alone in the office at the Shell Service Station, 6585 Mission Gorge Road, about 3 a.m. when he was attacked by a man in his 30s, said police spokesman Bill Robinson.

The robber stabbed Black in his right eye and face, pushed him to the ground, then stabbed him in the back, Robinson said.

Before he fled, the attacker took Black’s wallet, two rings and $85 from the cash register, Robinson said. A customer found Black lying on the office floor an hour later and called for help.

Police have no one in custody, Robinson said.
