Bill Advances on Waste Dumps
SACRAMENTO — The Assembly voted, 48-13, Wednesday for a bill by Assemblyman Steve Peace (D-Rancho San Diego) requiring state controls over garbage dumps and toxic waste incinerators proposed for sovereign American Indian lands, such as the Campo Reservation in East San Diego County.
Peace said he proposed the bill to prevent unscrupulous waste management firms from putting dumps on Indian land as a way to skirt tough California environmental regulations.
The measure now moves to the state Senate.
