City to Shut Stretch of Mulholland July 4 to Prevent Fireworks Blazes
The Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday voted to close the unpaved section of Mulholland Drive from Encino to Woodland Hills for six hours on July 4 as a precaution against fireworks starting a conflagration in the tinder-dry brush.
The stretch of Mulholland between Encino Hills Drive and Canoga Avenue was also closed last year, said Cindy Miscikowski, chief deputy to Councilman Marvin Braude, who represents the area.
“It’s a bit of a party place,” said Miscikowski, who said it was feared that Fourth of July celebrants might accidentally begin a fire in the sparsely populated area of the Santa Monica Mountains.
Under the measure approved Wednesday, city workers will patrol and barricade to traffic the entrances to that stretch of Mulholland from 6 p.m to midnight on July 4.
