TransAfrica Forum Gala Raises $190,000
TransAfrica Forum netted $190,000 at its second annual “Bridge to Freedom” gala June 14 at the Century Plaza. The funds go toward development of a foreign policy library and resource center dedicated to Africa and the Caribbean. The gala, hosted by Bill Cosby, featured performances by Joe Sample and Clint Holmes and honored Stevie Wonder with the Nelson Mandela Courage Award.
* Daniel Freeman Hospitals in Marina del Rey and Inglewood will share net proceeds of $20,000 raised by the Auxiliary Guild April 20 at the Santa Monica Museum of Flying. The “Freeman Goes Gatsby” event was chaired by Rosemary Kramer.
* Legal Aid Foundation of Long Beach held its fifth annual “Spring in Wine Country” benefit June 8 at Rancho Los Cerritos Gardens. The $30,000 netted goes to programs and services to battered women, abused children, indigents and senior citizens in the Long Beach, South Bay and Harbor areas.
* Ian S. Brown Foundation for Congenital Defects has received a $10,000 contribution from the Louis Goldstein estate. The foundation provides treatment to impoverished children with birth defects.
* Bar-Ilan University in Israel received more than $65,000, net proceeds from the Leadership Circle’s annual black-tie gala held May 30 at the Century Plaza Hotel. Proceeds will be used for cancer and AIDS research.
