TUSTIN : Council Votes Itself a $60 Monthly Raise

City Council members voted this week to give themselves $60-a-month raises, despite objections from council members Jim Potts and Earl J. Prescott. In a 3-2 decision Monday night, the council gave preliminary approval to the ordinance to increase each member’s monthly stipend to $500. The increase will be effective in April, after citywide elections are held.

“I just don’t think politicians should be setting their own salaries,” Prescott said. “They try to do it before every election.”

City Manager William A. Huston said the city has the right under state law to raise council compensation because Tustin’s population now tops 50,000.

“The way the law is set up, (the council stipend) is pegged to the population,” Huston said.

The council will consider final approval for the ordinance at its next meeting.
