Lung Assn. Hopes to Get Message to Smokers

The American Lung Assn. of Los Angeles County is celebrating July 3 as “NonDependence Day” to encourage smokers with a message that it’s never too late to quit. The association created the annual event in 1988, in response to the surgeon general’s report on nicotine addiction and to help fight respiratory diseases.

The 1990 Report of the Surgeon General stated that more than 38 million Americans have quit smoking. When a smoker quits, the body begins to repair some of the damage and nicotine is usually cleared from the body within a few days.
