Harried commuters who travel the congested, seven-mile stretch of the San Diego Freeway known as the South Bay Curve may find the going a little smoother in a couple of years.

A $9.6-million program to carve car-pool lanes down the middle of the freeway from 120th Street to the intersection with Normandie Avenue was approved Thursday by the California Transportation Commission. The lanes are scheduled to be completed in two years.

For years, state and county transportation officials have acknowledged that the stretch of freeway, which cuts through the communities of Hawthorne, Lennox, Lawndale, Redondo Beach and Torrance, is a motorist’s nightmare. During peak traffic periods, speeds now average under 30 m.p.h. for as much as eight hours a day.
