HUNTINGTON BEACH : Site of First Park in Holly-Seacliff OKd

The City Council this week tentatively agreed to build a park in the massive Holly-Seacliff development.

The park, which will encompass 4 to 5 acres, is the first of four parks the council has planned for the 768-acre development that is to include housing tracts and shopping centers.

It will straddle a residential street to be built in the largely undeveloped block bounded by Garfield and Ellis avenues and Golden West and Edwards streets. In approving the park location, the council rejected proposed alternate sites on Ellis Avenue and Golden West Street, preferring the park be in the middle of the neighborhood.

The park’s specific size and amenities will be determined as the planning of the Holly-Seacliff project proceeds.

Some of the houses along the main streets bordering the block are now under construction, but properties along the interior of the block still must be acquired for roads, the proposed park and other public amenities.

Area residents have asked that the park include equestrian facilities, said Jim Engle, the city’s park development and recreation superintendent. The city has collected $108,000 in developer fees that could help pay for horse trails and temporary stalls, Engle said.

The equestrian accommodations would provide additional trails for riders from the nearby Huntington Equestrian Center.
