Carlsbad’s Knox Advances at Oceanside Surfing Open
Taylor Knox of Carlsbad on Friday upset World Tour competitor Noah Budroe and Bud Pro standout Kirk Tice to advance in the $35,000 Body Glove Oceanside Open surfing tournament.
Knox will compete against three-time U.S. champion Mike Lambresi in today’s Main Event of the Pro-Am surfing division.
Also qualifying for the main event was Cardiff’s Rob Machado, runnerup at last year’s Oceanside stop and a top tour amateur. Machado defeated Kasey Curtis of San Juan Capistrano.
Other county surfers who advanced included: Chuy Reyna of Oceanside, Colin Smith of Cardiff, and Scott Farnsworth of Encinitas.
Two county competitors in the bodyboarding division got through Friday’s opening round, Chris Fessenden of Del Mar and Paul Roach of Encinitas.
Competition resumes at 7:30 this morning near the Oceanside Pier.
BASEBALL
Sean Rees, who began pitching at Mission Bay High School as a freshman in 1985 and who more recently pitched for Arizona State, signed with the Seattle Mariners and was assigned to San Bernardino of the California League.
OVER-THE-LINE
The 12th Club Cocktail Hall of Fame OTL tournament will begin today at 8 a.m. on Fiesta Island. Between 150 and 200 three-man teams are expected to compete for $5,000 in cash and prizes.
