Neil Barth of Newport Harbor Yacht Club sailed his J-44 Witch Doctor to first place in Class A as the seventh annual Audi-North Sails Race Week got under way at Long Beach.
Winds of 12 knots building to 21 provided lively action for 126 boats in seven classes. There will be two races today and a fourth Sunday.
Barth, with Bill Menninger calling tactics, got a good start, took the favored right side of the course and was first to finish, as well as the handicap winner, holding off Lew Beery’s Andrews 43 It’s OK by 21 seconds in the second closest boat-to-boat finish of the day.
