Federal agencies are investigating alleged payments to a fired University of Miami official and the financial aid records of more than 100 athletes, according to published reports.
Tony Russell, former assistant academic coordinator in the athletic department, is the primary target of the investigation by the FBI and the U.S. Dept. of Education, according to sources quoted by the Miami Herald and the Ft. Lauderdale (Fla.) Sun-Sentinel.
Russell allegedly falsified applications to help some students and scholarship athletes get federal aid to which they weren’t entitled and allegedly sought cash payments of up to $100 in return.
Nearly two years after he was charged with violating drug laws, Cleveland Brown running back Kevin Mack was granted early release from probation.
