This is superb mainstream jazz with a “today” feel. Lalama--the former Mel Lewis Orchestra tenor saxophonist who works with a robust, gleaming sound and melodic ingenuity--lets his crew loose on such unfamiliar gems as Hank Mobley’s “Third Time Around” and Sonny Rollins’ “Paradox.” Trumpeter Tom Harrell, pianist Barry Harris, drummer Kenny Washington and bassist Peter Washington are never less than excellent.
