On the final lap of qualifying, Emerson Fittipaldi broke the track record and took the pole position away from teammate Rick Mears for today’s Budweiser-G.I. Joe’s 200 Indy-car race at Portland, Ore.

Fittipaldi, winner of last week’s Detroit Grand Prix, lapped the 1.922-mile Portland International Raceway at 122.470 m.p.h. to supplant Mears, the Indianapolis 500 winner who qualified second at 122.242 m.p.h. Both Penske Chevrolets bettered the course record of 122.241 set by Mears on Friday.
