SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Long-range shooting was successful for one South team, but not effective enough for another Saturday night at the Ventura County all-star basketball games at Ventura High.

Sean Martin of Agoura High led the South as his sharp-shooting accounted for 31 points in a 114-105 victory over the North in the boys’ game.

In the girls’ game, Cori Herman of Ventura heated up by winning a three-point shootout at halftime and continued to sizzle from the field in the second half, scoring 10 of her team-high 17 points as the North cooled off some hot South shooting to win, 79-65.

Martin’s points were nearly not enough as the North took a 98-97 lead with 4:17 remaining on a twisting follow by Camarillo’s David Harbour.

Harbour scored 15 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter, but a back door lay-in by Royal’s Jared Byrne gave the North a 108-105 lead with 49 seconds to play. Byrne finished with 21 points.

Stephane Brown of Channel Islands ended his high school career with a flourish, winning the slam dunk contest before the game and scoring 28 points for the North.

Chris Loll of Thousand Oaks scored 17 points and Chris Falzone of Newbury Park added 12 for the South. Dennis Fowler led the South with 14 rebounds and Byrne had 10.

For the North, Marlowe Durmiendo and Manuk Kayaogluk of Rio Mesa each had 11 points.

In the girls’ game, Herman led a 13-2 surge over the first 3:31 of the fourth quarter, twisting her way to eight points as the North opened up a 74-60 advantage. The South had kept it close for three quarters as Simi Valley’s Lori Church and Teresa Turner of Hueneme paced a torrid three-point barrage. Church hit four three-point baskets and Turner added five as the South fired in 11 of 15 over three quarters.

But Church scored only two of her game-high 22 points in the fourth period and Turner was held scoreless after hitting for 15 earlier.

“They were hot,” said Herman. “We were right in their faces and they kept hitting threes.”

Herman drilled 15 of 25 three-point shots during the halftime contest, but she relied more on her quick drives to the hoop to guide the North attack in the second half. Sharp passing from Buena’s Lianne Ishikawa and Mia Palkie allowed the North to break away to several large leads, but Church and Turner brought the South back in the third quarter. But the South missed its first six shots of the final period and went just one of five from three-point range.

Herman wasn’t the only offensive gun for the North. Candis Carper of Channel Islands popped in 14 points, Palkie scored 13 and Jennifer Wells and Alise Ewin of Buena each added nine.

The North also outrebounded the South, 47-35.
