Burroughs Girls Stun Torrance in Soccer
Burroughs High battled Southern Section 3-A Division champion Torrance to a scoreless tie through regulation play, then outscored Torrance, 4-2, on penalty shots Saturday at El Camino College to advance to the second round of the L.A. Watts Summer Games girls’ soccer tournament.
Burroughs goalie Elsa Flores stopped eight shots in regulation. Penalty shots by Lorrie McIntire, Christina Palmer and Kristen Granados put Burroughs ahead, 3-2, and Amanda Schley scored to clinch the victory.
In other first-round girls’ soccer action, Chaminade beat Marymount, 3-0; La Canada routed Hart, 5-1; Calabasas beat Don Lugo, 1-0, on penalty kicks; and Crescenta Valley beat Highland, 3-0.
In second-round football action, Crespi beat Chatsworth, 37-6; Granada Hills beat Locke, 20-13; Canyon defeated University (Irvine), 19-6; and Beverly Hills edged Hart, 25-19.
First-round winners in boys’ basketball included: Taft (69-53 over Blair), Chatsworth (68-60 over Huntington Park), Cleveland (59-57 over Salesian), Buena (80-52 over Glenn), and Granada Hills, by forfeit, over Kennedy.
