A Guide to the Best of Southern California : LANDMARKS : Golden State Opportunities
Make room in your glove compartment, historical marker fans, the state has a guidebook just for you.
The latest version of “California Historical Landmarks” pinpoints 1,027 sites--some wacky, others truly profound--that have been designated worthy of note and, in many cases, marked with bronze plaques.
In Southern California, the book (paperback, $11.95; hardcover, $19.95) cites the first water-to-water flight in Newport Beach, the first movie studio in Hollywood, the tree under which gold was discovered in Newhall, the grave of a camel driver (the Army had paid him to bring the animals from Asia Minor) in Whittier and the World War II detention camp for Japanese citizens in Arcadia, among many others.
An order form for “California Historical Landmarks” is available through the state Department of Parks and Recreation--Publications Section, P.O. Box 942896, Sacramento 94296-0001.
