Big Bank Merger in Southeast: Wachovia Corp. and South Carolina National Corp. have agreed to an $835-million merger giving Wachovia a network of more than 525 offices in the Southeast, the banks said. The resulting company would have combined assets of $32.7 billion, which would place it among the 20 biggest banking companies in the nation. Wachovia said in a news release that the boards for both companies had approved a definitive agreement for merger.
