Canyon to Appeal Suspension of Welch

Canyon Country Canyon High decided Monday to appeal a Southern Section recommendation that calls for a one-year suspension of football Coach Harry Welch for conducting an off-season practice.

The Southern Section’s executive committee recommended suspending Welch on Friday after hearing a report from Commissioner Stan Thomas. Thomas will select three members of the 17-member executive committee to hear Canyon’s appeal. No date has been set for the hearing.

Canyon will not dispute the violation but objects to the severity of the punishment, according to Principal Bill White. Canyon will be represented at the hearing by White, Welch and Clyde Smyth, superintendent of the William S. Hart Union High School District.
