Fund-Raiser Planned to Help Save Mural
LAGUNA BEACH — To help raise the $30,000 needed for a conservator to remove and relocate Megan Jones’ mural, “Shadows of the Past,” in the Laguna Beach High School cafeteria, a fund-raising tea will be held Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. in the school cafeteria. The public will be able to view the life-size images of 15 of Jones’ Laguna High classmates. Jones, who graduated in 1984, died three years later from a rare form of cancer.
The $10-million renovation of the school--scheduled to begin next year--will involve demolition of the walls on which the mural was painted. So far, the school board has not agreed to commit school district funds to the project. Admission to the tea is free, but donation information will be available. Or donors may send tax-deductible contributions directly to the Laguna Beach Unified School District Megan Jones Mural Preservation Fund, c/o Laguna Beach High School, 625 Park Ave., Laguna Beach, Calif., 92651.
