West Covina : Asian Marrow Donors

A community center is soliciting Asian bone marrow donors despite the death of the Minnesota man for whom the donor drive originally was planned.

The East San Gabriel Valley Japanese Community Center originally scheduled the donor drive to find a match for Nicholas Rand Susuki, 35, of Arden Hills, Minn. Susuki, who was born in West Los Angeles, had a rare form of leukemia and died June 19 at the University of Minnesota Hospital.

Chances of finding a marrow match are greater within the patient’s ethnic group, said Marvel Miyata, director of the community center. She said Susuki’s family requested that the donor drive take place as scheduled to help other Asians.
