Giving Credit for Concerts

The Times is to be applauded for its excellent coverage of the summer concert series in Warner Park. These free concerts are always entertaining and rewarding.

As the immediate past president of the Musicians Union in Los Angeles, I feel compelled to point out omissions in Karen Kingsbury’s otherwise comprehensive article.

Valley Cultural Center was founded by Lou Bredlow. Clyde Porter donated the stage and paid for much of the construction of the facilities and the salaries of the staff in the early years.

Most important was the dedicated, hard-working Pearl Christlieb. She, and her husband, Don, did most of the actual work to bring this series to its current excellence. I know this to be fact as I worked with her as the administrator of the Music Performance Trust Funds of the Recording Industries, which provided much of the funding for musicians’ salaries. She supervised every aspect of the performances for many years.
