Pope John Paul II said Thursday he still hopes one day to travel as a pilgrim to Jerusalem to pray for peace with fellow Christians, Muslims and Jews.

In remarks to a group that raises funds for churches in the Middle East, the pontiff said that he hopes that “one day circumstances would allow” such a trip.

He didn’t elaborate, but in the past Vatican officials have set down conditions that include granting of international status to Jerusalem.
