Dodgers Put Howell on Disabled List

Concern about Mike Scioscia’s swollen left hand prompted the Dodgers to recall rookie catcher Carlos Hernandez from triple-A Albuquerque Thursday. To make room for Hernandez, relief pitcher Jay Howell was put on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 20, because of a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right elbow.

Howell is 2-2 with a team-leading 11 saves and had not allowed an earned run in his last five appearances.

The Dodgers replaced Howell by recalling Dennis Cook from Albuquerque, where was 7-3 with a 3.63 earned-run average in 14 starts. Outfielder Butch Davis, who had batted only once since being recalled June 19, was sent down.

By the time Howell is eligible for activation next weekend, the Dodgers expect Scioscia to return from a bruised hand that was struck by a foul ball Tuesday in a game against the San Francisco Giants.
