SPORTS ON WEEKEND TV : Dodgers Face the Braves
Two Dodger games, delayed coverage of Wimbledon, a major women’s golf tournament, a $1-million horse race and a championship fight are scheduled to highlight the weekend’s sports television viewing choices.
* Baseball: The National League West-leading Dodgers will face the Atlanta Braves at 4 p.m. today on KTTV Channel 11 and cable’s TBS, and 5 p.m. Sunday on ESPN (cable). Other telecasts will include the St. Louis Cardinals at Chicago Cubs (10 a.m. today, Channels 2 and 8; 11:15 a.m. Sunday, WGN, cable) and the Chicago White Sox at Minnesota Twins (5 p.m. today, WGN).
* Tennis: NBC (Channels 4, 36 and 39) will open its coverage of the most rain-interrupted Wimbledon ever with an 11:30 a.m. delayed telecast today and a noon delayed telecast Sunday.
* Golf: The women’s pro tour will make a rare major network appearance for the LPGA Championship, 10 a.m. today and Sunday on Channels 4, 36 and 39. The men’s tour will stop at Memphis for the $1-million Federal Express St. Jude tournament, 1 p.m. today and 12:30 p.m. Sunday on Channels 2 and 8. The seniors will be competing in the Southwestern Bell tournament at Kansas City, Mo., the city’s first PGA-sponsored event in 31 years. ESPN’s coverage begins at 2:30 p.m. today and Sunday.
* Other Sports: Today’s “Wide World of Sports” (4:30 p.m., Channels 7, 3 and 42; 3:30 p.m. Channel 10) will air delayed coverage of horse racing’s $1-million Hollywood Gold Cup and James Toney’s first defense of his International Boxing Federation middleweight championship, won last month with a surprising 11th-round knockout of Michael Nunn. Reggie Johnson, a Long Beach resident and the No. 1 contender, will be the challenger.
