Newport Firm Wins Contract: Pacific Scientific Co. of Newport Beach said it has been awarded a fifth multimillion-dollar contract to develop components for the Navy’s MK-48 guided torpedo. The torpedo is being made by Hughes Aircraft Co.’s Ground Systems Group in Fullerton. Pacific Scientific’s Electro Kinetics Division in Santa Barbara will begin work developing power systems for 139 torpedoes in 1992, after its current contract with Hughes runs out. To date, Pacific Scientific has won more than $40 million in contracts to develop the power systems.
