SEAL BEACH : City OKs Rezoning Ex-Rum Runner Site

The City Council this week approved the rezoning of the former Rum Runner restaurant site so that homes can be built there.

Developer Jim Watson said he wants to use the property for three commercial or retail buildings along Pacific Coast Highway and build 11 houses behind the buildings. He said such a plan, which is supported by area residents, would be more profitable for the city because of the sales-tax revenue that new businesses would generate.

The City Council’s action allows the rezoning of nine of the lots from commercial to residential. A portion of the property will maintain commercial zoning, and Watson said he expects Cape Cod-style buildings of between 880 and 1,228 square feet to be built along Pacific Coast Highway.

“I just think this plan fits the neighborhood and the city of Seal Beach to a T,” said Larry Applegate, who lives near the site on 16th Street.
