Last of 3 ‘Chunnel’ Passages Completed
Associated Press
SANGATTE, France — A huge drilling machine dug through a final section of earth Friday to complete the last of the three passages that make up the so-called Chunnel linking Britain and France under the English Channel.
The achievement marks the end of more than three years of round-the-clock work by 11 drilling machines, boring nearly 100 miles of tunnel.
A service tunnel was completed in December, and the northern rail tunnel was completed on May 22.
