NATION IN BRIEF : NEW YORK : Reputed Mob Boss to Get New Trial
An appellate court panel in New York City ordered a new trial for Anthony (Fat Tony) Salerno, the reputed former head of the Genovese crime family, and seven associates. The U.S. 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals reversed the racketeering convictions and said the case was tainted by the exclusion of testimony that might have helped the defendants. Most of the defendants, including Salerno and reputed Genovese captain Matthew (Matty the Horse) Ianniello, won’t be released as a result of the ruling because they are serving prison sentences from other prosecutions.
