El Monte : General Plan Overhauled
In an effort to avoid overcrowding, the City Council has approved the first major overhaul of the city’s General Plan since it was created in 1969.
The council Tuesday unanimously approved a general amendment to the plan, which reflects a movement toward lower-density land use in certain areas, particularly the city’s north-central corridor.
It also expresses the city’s commitment to seek “better-quality development,” said Harold O. Johanson, director of planning and community development. In addition, he said, the amendment is “full of programs to increase the amount of affordable housing in the city.”
The housing element of the plan must still be approved by the state Department of Housing and Community Development.
