VENTURA : 1 Youth Still Missing From County Center
Authorities were still searching Wednesday for a youth who escaped, along with three others, from a county detention facility for juveniles in Ventura on Monday.
The youth who is still missing is believed to have gotten hung up on the razor wire on the 20-foot fence that surrounds the Frank A. Colston Youth Center on Hillmont Street.
“We know his pants were cut,” said Sharon Clark, supervising deputy probation officer. “But we don’t know if he was injured or not.”
On Monday, the four youths escaped by smashing a chair through a classroom window. Three of the four juveniles then climbed atop a trailer parked next to the fence and jumped, while a fourth scaled the fence.
One was apprehended on the other side of the fence where he lay after injuring his ankles in the jump. The two others were arrested later, Clark said.
The injured boy was taken to Ventura County Medical Center in Ventura for emergency treatment. He was later sent back to the youth center.
The center is a holding and counseling facility for youths aged 12 to 18 who are serving sentences of two to six years for crimes ranging from vandalism, burglary and auto theft to assault with a deadly weapon.
