The City Council this week approved a draft of a trash reduction and recycling plan to comply with requirements of the state Legislature.

A law signed in 1989 mandates strict requirements for establishing trash programs throughout the state to reduce waste. The law requires that by 1995, each city and county must divert 25% of waste from landfills and divert 50% by the year 2000.

The city’s plan incorporates existing and future programs. The plan also describes how the programs will be funded, who is responsible for implementation and how the programs will be evaluated.
