Mexico Gets Even With Honduras in the End, 1-1
The spirited rivalry between Mexico and Honduras played out about the same on the field Wednesday night as it did in the stands--lively, rambunctious and pretty much dead even.
The teams played to a 1-1 tie in the CONCACAF Gold Cup at the Coliseum. That goes for the thousands of fans that agonized for each team. Their raucous cheering enlivened the match, which figured to be closely contested.
Honduras jumped on Mexico in the first half, taking advantage of a sluggish effort by the Mexicans. The only goal of the half came when Marco Anariba connected from 25 feet out in the ninth minute.
Honduras kept the pressure on in the second half, raining shots on Mexican goalkeeper Adrian Chavez. Honduras, which scored nine goals in its previous two games, established its offensive threat and kept Mexico off-balance and backpedaling.
But Mexican defender Guillermo Munoz took advantage of Honduran backfield disarray and fed Carlos Hermosillo for a header that tied the score in the 57th minute.
Canada beat Jamaica, 3-2, but both were eliminated.
Guatemala not only had not won a match but had not scored a goal before registering a 1-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago. Luis Espel knocked in a header in the 89th minute.
