Canyons Spikes Men’s Volleyball for 1991-92 Year
The College of the Canyons athletic department voted to shelve the men’s volleyball program for the 1991-92 school year, college officials announced Wednesday.
The vote was prompted by the resignation of men’s volleyball Coach Jerry Garon. Athletic Director Joe Gerda, who is also the assistant dean of instruction, forwarded a recommendation to shelve the program to college officials for a decision Tuesday.
Gerda said a consensus agreed that the year-old program served a limited number of students and that the $8,000 budgeted for the program could be better used this year to augment well-established athletic programs.
James Walker, assistant superintendent-vice president of the Santa Clarita Community College District, said the program involved nine returning students.
Channel Islands Harbor will be the site for the 14th Corinthian Classic Yacht race Aug. 3.
The event is the last in a series of four major wooden boat races on the West Coast that draws nearly 40 classic sailboats from Morro Bay south to San Diego. The living-history fleet, all designed before 1952, will start the race outside the harbor breakwater at noon.
