The FBI is investigating a shortage of $200,000 to $400,000 in the accounts of the U.S. Bobsled Federation.
Special agent Harry Grogan said the U.S. Attorney’s office suggested the FBI investigate after published reports that an audit of the federation’s finances in December showed $200,000 to $400,000 in expenses could not be accounted for.
The U.S. Olympic Committee demanded a review of the federation’s finances for the last three months of 1988 and all of 1989 and 1990 after the group failed to file mandated reports.
Allegations of sloppy bookkeeping, mismanagement, political infighting and fraud have been leveled at the federation by current and former members since the audit was announced.
