An off-duty sheriff’s deputy died and a second was arrested following a motorcycle crash, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said.

Authorities said Thomas Carrell, 27, was driving the motorcycle north on Old State Road at East Fallbrook Street when it veered out of control about 12:30 a.m. Sunday. Carrell’s passenger, Mark Neyman, 24, was fatally injured when his head struck the curb. Both deputies are guards at County Jail in Vista.

After being treated and released from Fallbrook Hospital, Carrell was arrested by California Highway Patrol officers on suspicion of felony drunk driving and vehicular manslaughter. He was taken to the County Jail downtown on $10,000 bail, authorities said.

On Sunday afternoon, Carrell told investigators that he was not the driver of the motorcycle. Officers released him on his own recognizance but have not dropped charges against him. The investigation is continuing.

Carrell has worked as a corrections deputy at the Vista jail for one year, Neyman for 8 months, authorities said.
