Woman Shot in Throat From Car
ANAHEIM — A 22-year-old Anaheim woman was reported in critical condition Sunday after she was shot through the throat in a residential neighborhood.
Norma Marie Alverez was standing in the 300 block of East Julianna Street about 3 a.m. when she was shot from a passing car, Police Sgt. Tom Mathisen said.
The bullet from a small-caliber handgun passed through her neck, he said. Occupants of the small compact car fled.
Alverez was not alone, and signs point to an exchange of gunfire, Mathisen said.
Friends took Alverez to Anaheim Memorial Hospital where she was airlifted to UCI Medical Center. She was listed in critical condition.
Despite the firing of other shots, Mathisen said there is no evidence the incident was gang-related. “We’re getting to the point where everyone is carrying a gun for self-protection,” he said.
