Reilly Wins Men’s Singles Title in 1st Try in La Jolla Tournament
Unseeded Chris Reilly captured the men’s open singles title of the 75th La Jolla Tennis Championships at La Jolla Tennis Club while playing for the first time in the tournament Sunday. Second-seeded Julie Tullberg, a former open doubles champion and a previous singles semifinalist, emerged with the women’s open singles championship.
Reilly, a San Diegan who plays for the University of Utah, easily defeated eighth-seeded Mike Brown of San Diego, 6-3, 6-2. Brown, an All-American at McLennan Community College in Texas, was also playing La Jolla for the first time.
Tullberg of Ojai defeated top-seeded Jennifer Slattery of Huntington Beach, the No. 1-ranked women’s open player in Southern California, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1. Slattery, making her La Jolla debut, knocked off Tullberg’s doubles partner, Dorey Brandt, in Saturday’s semifinals. Tullberg and Brandt won the doubles title at La Jolla in 1988. Tullberg, who played two years at San Diego State before transfering to USC, overpowered Slattery with her ground strokes in the third set.
BASEBALL
The San Bernardino Indians scored two unearned runs on a fly ball lost in the sun, breaking a 3-3 tie in the seventh inning, and went on to beat the San Diego Stars, 7-3, for the championship of the National Baseball Congress Fourth of July Regional Tournament at Grossmont College. The host Stars (25-12) posted victories against the California Seals, 10-9, and the Victor Valley Mets, 11-1, earlier in the day to reach the finals of the semipro tournament.
