164 U.S. Firms Make Fortune’s 500 Global List
New York — American companies again dominated the list of the world’s 500 biggest industrial concerns last year, capturing 164 spots, including six of the top 10, a compilation by Fortune magazine shows.
Japan ranked second in the international tally, claiming 111 companies on the list, followed by Britain with 43 and France and Germany each claiming 30 spots.
General Motors remained the world’s largest industrial company, posting revenue of $125.1 billion. But tough times in the auto industry put GM near the bottom in terms of profit; a $1.99-billion loss ranked the company a lowly 485th based on net income.
Other U.S. giants to vie with two British, one Japanese and one Italian company for the leading 10 places were Exxon, Ford, IBM, Mobil and General Electric.
