MOORPARK : Observatory to Offer Safe View of Eclipse
The Moorpark College Observatory will be open Thursday to provide a special viewing of the solar eclipse, officials said.
The observatory, located at the southeast end of the campus, will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., astronomy instructor Dennis Leatart said. Admission is free.
Leatart said a telescope will be used to project the image of the solar eclipse onto a screen, where it can be viewed safely. Experts warn that looking directly at the sun, even for a very short time, can cause blindness.
Leatart said three or four telescopes, equipped with special solar filters, will also be available for viewing the moon’s eclipse of the sun.
He said the best time for viewing will be at 11:28 a.m., when maximum coverage of the sun is expected to occur. Although other parts of the world will experience a total solar eclipse, there will be only a partial eclipse in Southern California, with a maximum of about 70% of the sun being obscured, Leatart said.
