Dana’s Campaign Funds

Victor Valle and Rudy Torres offered interesting conjecture on how new Supervisor Gloria Molina might build a following for what they labeled her populist approach to government (Opinion, June 23).

However, their conjecture is built at least in part on erroneous assumptions.

The authors claim that former Supervisor Pete Schabarum distributed $213,000 to my reelection campaign in 1984 and that he contributed another $100,000 to my “come from behind” 1986 campaign. That is not true. Schabarum contributed nothing to either my 1984 or 1988 (not 1986 as the article said) reelection campaigns. I might also note that 1988 was hardly a “come from behind” campaign since I received 75% of the votes cast.

The only time Schabarum contributed anything to any of my campaigns was in my first election in 1980 when he loaned the campaign $100,000--all of which was subsequently repaid.

Conjecture is a part of the world of those interested in politics, but like any hypothesis, when it is constructed on inaccurate data, it falls apart.
