Downey : 2 Redevelopment Areas Get Approval; 3rd One Delayed
The City Council on Tuesday gave final approval to two new redevelopment areas.
Downey Community Hospital plans to develop the 14.3-acre tract at Brookshire and Margaret avenues. The second zone, a 12-acre parcel along Lakewood Boulevard and Gallatin Road, will be used to expand an auto mall.
The City Council excluded three properties from the Lakewood-Gallatin zone earlier this month after business owners complained that they did not want to be included in an area where the city could exercise condemnation power.
A decision on a third redevelopment zone has been delayed while council members negotiate with the Takeo Murata family, major property owners in the proposed 38.4-acre zone. The site is at the intersection of the Santa Ana and San Gabriel River freeways.
