Year-Round Schedules Challenged by Parents
Year-round schedules at five Lynwood schools started only two weeks ago, but classes could be halted on Monday if school officials cannot beat back a legal challenge from a group of dissident parents.
A Superior Court judge in Compton recently agreed with the parents that the Lynwood Unified School District failed to meet a deadline for notifying them about the new schedule. Judge Kenneth W. Gale issued a temporary restraining order suspending classes, but delayed the order until Friday to give the district time to appeal.
School Superintendent Audrey Clarke said the district is preparing its appeal and will file it by the Friday deadline. She also said she is confident that the state Court of Appeal will agree with the district that a year-round schedule is necessary to alleviate overcrowding in the Lynwood schools.
