Kingston Trio in Poway

The Kingston Trio will perform two benefit concerts for Muscular Dystrophy at 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts.

Solo folk performer Peter Wickersham will open for the troupe.

Founded in 1957 by original members Nick Reynolds, Bob Shane and Dave Guard, The Kingston Trio revolutionized folk music in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The troupe’s first single, “Tom Dooley,” spent 18 weeks in the national Top 40, reaching number one in 1958.

The Trio has disbanded and regrouped over the years and now consists of Reynolds, John Stuart and George Grove. Using acoustic guitars and banjoes, the group will perform old hits including “Greenback Dollar,” “Reverend Mr. Black,” “Where Have All the Flowers Gone” and “Early Morning Rain.”

Tax deductible tickets for the benefit performances are $15, $25 and $35. The performing arts center is at 15498 Espola Road. For reservations, call the box office at 748-0505.
