Sabatini needed only 54 minutes, despite suffering two service breaks in the first set.

“It was my first match since Wimbledon. The surface is quite different. It’s very fast here compared with Wimbledon,” Sabatini said of her slow start.

The tournament is being played on artificial surface.

Katerina Maleeva of Bulgaria beat Anke Huber of Germany 6-3, 6-2.

Second-seeded Christian Saceanu of Germany lost to unseeded Glenn Layendecker, 6-1, 6-3, in the $150,000 Hall of Fame Championships at the Newport, R.I.

Layendecker, ranked No. 150 in the world, said: “I was lucky to get out of a 15-40 twice in the second set. I wasn’t sure I could finish him off because he had been so close on my serve. But I felt I executed well, and I won almost every important point.”
