OXNARD : Groundbreaking Set for New School
The Oxnard Elementary School District will celebrate the construction of a new intermediate school at a groundbreaking ceremony Saturday in Oxnard’s La Colonia neighborhood.
In October, the district passed a resolution to acquire about 28 acres by eminent domain to build the school that will be in the northeast area of Oxnard at the proposed intersection of Juanita and Latigo avenues.
The school, serving seventh and eighth grades, has been named after Robert J. Frank, a science teacher who taught in the Oxnard district for 40 years. Frank died several years ago.
The new school has the capacity to handle 1,600 students during the district’s year-around teaching program, Supt. Norman R. Brekke said. The school will be the third intermediate school in the district, which also runs 14 elementary schools.
Brekke said construction is estimated to cost $16 million, not including the price of the land, which is still in negotiation. The school is expected to be completed by the 1993-94 school year.
Funding for the school comes from a $40-million bond passed by Oxnard voters in April, 1988.
The district has requested that visitors attending the 1 p.m. ceremony dress in casual clothing and appropriate shoes for ground that has been tilled.
