Army Sgt. Edward Michael Canales, who was awarded the Bronze Star for gallantry in action in the Persian Gulf War, is scheduled to come home to La Puente today.

Canales was decorated after risking his life in an attempt to save a fellow soldier during combat with the Iraqi Republican Guard. His combat unit in the Gulf War was Ghost Troop II of the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment.

The 23-year-old graduate of Baldwin High School has been in the Army for three years. He plans to join the Los Angeles Police Department.

Arcadia firefighters Andy Troncale, Mike Clark, Jeff Lee, Mike Stratton and Alex Knudsen chomped down 170 ribs, beating 12 other Arcadia teams in Tony Roma’s restaurant’s seventh annual rib-eating contest.

The five will compete in a regional contest Aug. 11 in West Covina. The June 30 Arcadia rib feast raised $3,250 for the Starlight Foundation, a nonprofit international organization that grants wishes to seriously ill children.
