Cat Shelter Closure, Abandonment of Tame Rats Decried
I can’t describe the shock and dismay I felt upon reading The Times article on the recent closing of the cat shelter in Fullerton for accepting strays (“Cat Shelter Closed for Accepting Strays,” July 4).
The result was the death of over 100 pet cats and the loss to Orange County of a valuable resource that wasn’t costing us taxpayers a dime. As long as people continue to be irresponsible pet owners, there will always be a need for shelters.
I applaud Mary Nadwodny and the shelter volunteers for they are the heroes of our society. Shame on Orange County Animal Control for being so unrelenting in their application of the “law.” If they had the animals’ interests at heart, something could have been worked out and such drastic measures would not have been taken.
Or maybe the law was just an excuse to get rid of the “competition.” Was the shelter doing it better, more humanely and with love? Hopefully, the County Board of Supervisors will investigate the matter so we can all understand what really happened.
